The birch tree symbolizes a fresh start, new life, love and can bring courage and determination to those of us who are follow the path of spiritual growth, purification, renewal and development. Although the birch does appear fragile, it is in fact extremely hardy. This teaches us that in apparent weakness there is often to be found great strength, change and on the consideration of new directions and goals to be experienced in our lives. It teaches the lesson of unselfishness and of caring for the needs of others in ways that help them to flourish of their own accord.

Traditionally birch was used to drive out evil spirits and return to sanity those who had become mad. Its calendrical association is with the beginnings of the year, and with the sacred festival of Samhain, hence its connection with making a fresh start.

The Aspen Pando is the largest living organism on this planet (with the exception of the mycelial network) The over 10,000 years old clonal colony encompasses 43.6 hectares (108 acres), weighs nearly 6,000 metric tons, and has over 40,000 stems (trunks), which die individually and are replaced by new stems growing from its roots. The ability to carry out the process of photosynthesis in the white bark, which most trees carry this process out through the leaves. This means in winter after the leaves have fallen and snow begins to fall, the tree continues to produce sugar for energy.
