The name Ix Chel has been translated as “Lady Rainbow” or as “She of the Pale Face,” an allusion to the moon's surface. According to longstanding archaeological tradition she is the most important and ancient of Mayadeities. The Moon Goddess, due to the fact that the cycles of the moon are those which determine times of fertility, planting and harvest associated with the feminine character. She also affects the earth through her effect on rains and water.
