I had several ancient bushes in the back yard when I was small. Some of my first memories were that smell and looking at the blossoms.

The lilac have their own genera “Syringa” In Victorian times, they were considered reminders of an old flame. Widows often wore lilacs. Lilacs are often the first flowers to bloom when temperatures rise and only last a couple of weeks, so lilacs often symbolize spring.

White; represent purity and innocence, part of childhood

Purple; symbolize spirituality darker purple reflects spiritual mysteries. Lighter shade is associated with one’s first love.

Blue; happiness and tranquility

Pink; Is associated with love and strong friendships.

Red; is associated with passion, love and the sheer thrill of being alive, especially after surviving a harrowing experience.

The Lilac capital of the world is Rochester, New York, home of the annual Lilac Festival.
